Hor Vi Neevan Ho – Noori

Hor Vi Neevan Ho. This phrase means: “Bow your head down even further (in humility)”

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Sufi-folk genre is one of my favourites. And Noori brothers [Ali Noor & Ali Hamza] have given us (again) such an awesome song via Coke Studio.

Awesome work. One of the best parts? The Veena played by their mother. And lyrics are so inspiring. I would encourage you to listen to it fully along with the lyrics.

Here is the song + video:

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do when every time I listen to it. Mesmerizing!  :)

  1. I never knew there are so many connoisseurs of Sufi in this country…… Hope you have the entire collection of Coke Studio sessions….. Indeed a gift of nectar to the auditory nerves deprived by conundrum of daily life……

Bumped into your page accidently yet liked the meticulous approach of expressing your heart. Kudos!!! Keep up the job and music sharing.

    Regards

  2. Nandini,

From my FB profile, “I start my day listening to this song. Beautiful poetry and doubly beautiful music. I wish there was a God that I could attribute the beauty conveyed by this song to…or maybe the absence of such an entity makes this song every more profound and beautiful!”

Turns out that I have been tripping on this song from the day I heard it. I discovered Coke Studio about two weeks back. The songs by Noori have been a more recent discovery. I’m a drummer/musician by training and a physicist by profession(which explains my atheism). I know how difficult it is to render music like this. But the poetry which almost always takes a beating when it comes to good music, is unmatched in this case. I was just googling to find if anyone else likes this song as much as I do. I feel at peace now.

    Thanks,
    Arun.

ps: I was stunned to see a South Indian style Gottuvadhyam being played by a Pakistani musician. Found out from sources on the net that this has been a recent addition to North Indian classical music. The instrument is called Sagar Veena though. I guessed she could have been their mother, but wasn’t sure until I read your article. Thanks for the trivia! :)

    • Hi Arun.

Absence or presence of God (which need not be necessarily an “entity”) depends on your outlook towards life and this universe. Anyways, that’s not the point here. I’m glad you appreciate this song. I wish all humans could accept it and implement at least a part of it, this world would be better and peaceful place to live.

And about the Veena used by their mother in this song, it was made and developed in Pakistan by their family member (may be their father or grandfather). They never mentioned its relation to any Indian equipment though. But thanks for the information. You may check the BTS (Behind the Scenes) video of this song on YouTube. I remember they mentioned about it there.

      Thanks for dropping by! :)

P.S. : And, for me it’s like, the more I learn about the human body or any other life on Earth, or this Universe, the more I see the signature of one common source, and I like to call it God. I mean it just can’t be a co-incidence! It can be, but that is difficult to believe. God defined by various religions, is difficult to digest too, even for me. Although I’m not against any of those beliefs :)

  3. Nandini,

Facts don’t change because of one’s outlook on life and the universe. Facts by definition are independent of our views and opinions. But again, like you mentioned that is not the point, and moreover this beautiful blog is not the place for a debate. If you wish, we can take the debate offline. My email: irodov707@gmail.com.
Regarding the song, I love the song beyond compare.

The Sagar Veena bears a striking resemblance to the Rudra Veena, Gottuvadhyam(or Vichitra Veena). The Rudra Veena is supposed to have been played by the King of ancient Lanka, Ravana. He is supposed to have mastered the art of playing the Raga Kamboji. Some legends have it that he invented the Raga. Some legends have it that he pulled out his entrails and played Raga Kamboji on them, as a Veena! He did this to appease Lord Shiva(in Hindu mythology). Every myth has an ounce of truth hidden in it. The Sagar Veena on the other hand is relatively new.

    Best,
    Arun

PS: You’re right, it can’t be a coincidence. Nothing is coincidence. Everything has a reason, one that can be figured out using a relentless application of logic. And the best part about logic is you don’t need to believe!

  4. Well, the last thing I would like to do is to debate on the term “God”. I can’t do that even with people who are believers, let alone with non-believers. So, no debate!

And thanks for the Veena information. It was all new for me.
    :)

Have a good time with Coke Studio.

  5. This is a phenomenal song! Have been listening to it for the last 4 days…didnt realise it had a following across the border in India..I m from Pakistan. Good to find people as excited and moved by this track as I am. Thanks Nandini!

    • Oh, I’m glad you came to know that. Music knows no borders or boundaries! You just need to keep your heart open to let it enter into you. Coke Studio itself is a phenomenon and Noori along with it is magical.

      Thanks for dropping by. :)

  6. I have been following Coke Studio since I first heard fusion of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Ali Azmat..
But this song is just beautiful. Actually, beyond beautiful! The poetry, veena, music! Pure Magic to the ears! It is much more than a song..
I’ll strongly recommend to listen to another beautiful song by the same band, “Aik Alif”

Even more bow down (..to this song)

    Regards,
    Ashish

  7. i’ve been listening to coke studio since 4 years and this song i listen to almost every day since it came out last year. Such a magnificient number. and the fact that noori is basically a rock/pop band (too good at that too) makes this even more interesting. Great to know that coke studio is being appreciated across the border too. Proves the fact that genuine music lovers are not bound by geography. Cheers from pakistan!
